John Wade Keyes named Alabama's First Veteran
What an honor! On Flag Day, June 14, 2023, our Chapter namesake, John Wade Keyes, was proclaimed by the Alabama Legislature and Senator Tom Butler to be "Alabama's first Veteran!" The public ceremony was well attended and held in the Athens City Cemetery, Athens, Limestone County, Alabama.
The John Wade Keyes Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Tennessee Valley Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) joined together to celebrate this great patriot. SAR honored the ceremony by marking John Wade Keyes' grave and by opening and closing the ceremony with full color guard and a seven gun salute. DAR members rededicated our marker placed there by our DAR chapter predecesors in 1912.
As the Keyes family farm changed hands and the family cemetery fell into disrepair, members of the John Wade Keyes Chapter worked to have the family moved from the farm cemetery to the Athens City Cemetery. In 1912 they were laid to rest one last time.
Audience members stand for the Pledge of Allegiance at Constitution Day Celebration in McCandless Hall in Athens, Alabama. The celebration was hosted by Athens State University and the John Wade Keyes Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution held each year in remembrance of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, which was finalized Sept. 17, 1787. On the right members are with state dignitaries.
